Day 13 (June 20): Athens

After breakfast on the rooftop of the Athens Gate Hotel, we headed over to the Acropolis. We toured around for several hours looking at the Parthenon, the theatre of Dionysus, the porch of maidens and the ruins all around the Acropolis. I loved seeing the theatre of Dionysus where Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes, among others, performed their plays. I could only imagine watching Lysistrata being performed there thousands of years ago. I also loved the porch of Maidens — so ancient and so elegant. We walked up to the Hill of Muses for a fantastic view of the Acropolis and then headed back to our hotel for our afternoon siesta. Afterwards we went to the Acropolis Museum. It was awesome and I got a little overwhelmed with the history and sheer amount of time that separates us from ancient Greece. We took a funicular up to the highest hill in Athens to watch the sun set over the city and over the Acropolis. It was very beautiful. We ended the night with a fantastic Greek dinner (spinach pie and greek salad for me) complete with local wine and ouzo of course.
