Day 17 (June 24): Cinque Terre: Vernazza, Italy

Today we hiked the seven mile trail that connects the five tiny villages of the Cinque Terre. It was a gorgeous day and perfect for hiking. Very warm, but not too hot. The trail was definitely not easy and we were happy to get a good workout. The trail was so narrow in parts that it was difficult to pass other hikers when necessary — which made it all the more fun. The views were spectacular. I had heard that the Cinque Terre was overly-crowded and touristy. But, this was not the case. There weren’t that many people there at all and it definitely was not too crowded. At times, we felt like we had the gorgeous trails to ourselves. I would rank the Cinque Terre as my favorite place that I’ve visited in Italy. We hiked through several beautiful and very verdant vineyards and we enjoyed drinking the local Cinque Terre wine all the more after seeing these vineyards. The wine, like the food, was absolutely delicious. After our hike, Kory went for a brief swim before we headed to dinner at the Belforte Castle — a restaurant built inside an old castle that literally hangs off the cliffs. We sat out on the terrace with the ocean below us and the sun setting in front of us. We sipped the local wine, Kory tried the anchovies, and we were both deliriously happy. I will definitely be back to the Cinque Terre.
