Day 24 (July 1): Split, Croatia

We woke up very early and took a motor boat to the Venice airport. We were nervous about flying to Croatia and about taking a European airline from one country to another. We didn’t know what to expect in terms of check-in process, customs, our luggage, Kory’s fly-rod, etc. We flew first on Moldavian airlines to Budapest, Hungary. We were surprised at how smoothly everything went. The flight to Budapest was actually pleasant. No problems. The Budapest airport was very clean and every one was very friendly and helpful. We took Malev Hungarian airlines to Split and, again, the flight was quite pleasant. We arrived in Split just fine; my suitcase did not. After filling out a lost baggage form, a representative from our hotel took us into the city of Split. We stayed at Hotel Vestibul which is right inside the 1,700 year old Diocletian’s Palace. The hotel is quite nice, but I was a little down about losing my luggage — along with all my clothes, contacts, medicine, jewelry, make-up, etc. Kory was very patient with me as I wandered through the village trying to find the essentials that I would need until I was reunited with my luggage. I finally found a strange green jump-suit that would work. We found a nice little spot for dinner and had our first Croatian meal. I had meat balls and boiled potatoes. We also got a bottle of Croatian wine. All very delicious! After dinner, we wandered around the main plaza in front of Diocletian’s palace. There was some sort of major concert going on, complete with jumbo-trons and pyrotechnics. We enjoyed some Croatian people-watching as many Croatians were hanging out and listening to the music.
