Day 27 (July 4): Korcula, Croatia

We rented a little boat today from a local retiree who insisted that Kory sample some of his home made liquor as it would make him a “better captain.” We then spent a nice day cruising the waters around the island of Korcula. There are around 1,200 Dalmatian islands along the Adriatic coast and we bumped into several of them today. There are many little islands that are almost within a stone’s throw of Korcula and it was very fun to explore them. Most of them were uninhabited with their only visitors being the birds and other animals that flew or lived there and the occasional tourist who made their way out by boat — usually wandering around the island naked or topless. A bunch of sheep roamed around one cute little island. We anchored the boat at several spots along the coast for a swim and some snorkeling. We saw tons of mussels and urchins as well as schools of various types of small fish. Unfortunately, we didn’t see anything that looked fishable. At our last stop of the day, the anchor broke. The boat owner was frustrated when we returned the boat anchor-less, but still insisted that we both go in and have another drink from his home made liquor; which was some type of brandy to which he had added oranges and a bunch of leaves. Kory liked it. It was a little strong for me. We had a nice dinner and cheered to a happy 4th of July.
