Day 31 (July 8): Tara River, Montenegro

Our friendly camp chef ensured that we started our day out right with a nice breakfast complete with scones, various cheeses and scrambled eggs.  After that we began gearing up for our rafting adventure.  I was worried that I would freeze since it was very cold out and I had no warm clothes after Malev Hungarian Airlines lost my luggage.  However, two wet suits and a rain jacket shut out the cold and I was almost warm in my wet-suit cocoon.  We climbed into a workhorse land rover and our guides drove us about 18 kilometers away to the launch spot.  After some brief instructions on paddling and how to maneuver the rapids we were off.  We hit our first rapids almost immediately.  The exhilaration of blasting through the rapids and being doused by the cold water quelled any fear that I had and I thoroughly enjoyed the rafting trip.  It was a short trip – only about two hours – but we went through many fun rapids and enjoyed a lot of calm moments on the water as we watched Bosnia roll past us on the right and Montenegro on the left.  It is an extremely beautiful corner of the world.  We pulled the raft ashore when we came to a pretty waterfall and spent a few minutes on the shore.

After rafting, the Chef greeted us at camp with a fabulous multi-course lunch.  The first course consisted of various types of Dalmatian ham (a/k/a prosciutto) and different cheeses — none of which Kory and I had ever had.  A highlight of the first course was the divine homemade bread.  Next came a delicious stew of vegetables and meat.  Finally, we had lamb cooked in a dutch oven with extremely flavor-full potatoes and excellent beans.  To our great surprise, it was one of the best meals of our entire trip.  We topped it off with the camp’s homemade wine!  Fantastic!  After that, I challenged Kory to a game of badminton.  I beat him in the first round, but lost in best of three.  It was very fun and we thoroughly exhausted ourselves.  Of course, we had to take a short siesta after that.  We spent the rest of the afternoon lounging around camp, reading, playing with the dogs, and wandering the banks of the river.  Dinner was similarly impressive and we ended the night by sitting by the camp fire.   Camp Grab was much better than I had expected!
