After sleeping in, we took the hotel bikes and rode down to check out the Old City of Kotor. It is a pretty little bay surrounded by high mountains. The Old City has the classic ancient buildings that have been there forever and was designed as a fort to defend the city inhabitants. A huge wall juts up onto the steep cliffs that are directly behind the city. The ambitious can take the 1,300 steps to the top. If Kotor would have been our first stop on the trip, I’m sure we would have bounded up the stairs double-time. At this stage of our trip, however, Kory and I were more content to watch the other tourists climb the 1,300 steps during the scorching heat of the afternoon. Instead, we had lunch and then toured the maritime museum. We saw some old weapons and cannons that my dad would have loved. We also saw a map showing all of the ships that are sunk right off the bay where we were staying. It was interesting (and nice and cool inside the museum).
After our tour of the Old City, we went back to our hotel. We whiled away the pleasant afternoon laying out, swimming in the hotel’s pool and relaxing in the sauna. We went right next door to another charming garden restaurant for another delicious Croatian dinner.
