Day 37 (July 14): Paris, France — Bastille Day

Our last day in Paris and the last day of our long-awaited trip!  I was a little melancholy today.  We have had such a fantastic time and I am both very sad but ready to go home.  Unfortunately, it poured rain almost all day today.  Kory and I actually got a little lucky, however, because it rained in patches and we just happened to be indoors during most of the rain.  We went to a little neighborhood café for crepes and coffee.  After petit dejeuner, we wandered over to a little farmer’s market to look at all the fruits, vegetables, bread, olives, meat and fish that were being sold.  Susan and Lee would have loved it.   Later, we went to the Louvre and were horrified by the massive line that snaked all the way around the grounds of the Louvre and around the corner.  We quickly abandoned the idea of going inside the Louvre.  It is Bastille Day and the Louvre is free on Bastille Day.  That, along with the rain, probably led to the unwieldy line.  We wandered around the grounds of the Louvre, admiring the outside of the building, before going over to walk down the banks of the Seine, down the Champs Elysees, and over to the Arc De Triomphe.  We climbed the stairs to the top of the Arc De Triomphe for a birds’ eye view of Paris.  We then took a siesta and had dinner before heading over to Trecadaro Park and the Eiffel Tower to see the Bastille’s Day fireworks.  I’m not usually a huge fan of fireworks, but there is definitely something different about seeing them in Paris — lighting up the Eiffel Tower with a brilliant tiny diamonds in the sky.  It was incredibly beautiful and a truly amazing experience.
